Magicseaweed Description

The speed fish is a modern take on a classic design. We've embraced the wider template common to the traditional fish giving the advantage of early planning, superior paddling ability and great wave count but combined it with a slightly narrower tail and increased nose rocker to ensure the confidence to make the late take off, lock the rail and enjoy confidence in more critical sections of the wave. We've also added a deep double concave running through the tail to really increase the hold and drive allowing you to either enjoy the super loose experience of surfing with smaller fins in small waves, or to take the board into situations you'd normally feel uncomfortable in with a fish.

As the name suggests this board is designed to turn your front foot into the accelerator with the lightest touch generating speed down the line. It's the board for you if you want the advantages of the fish template (more paddling ability, higher wave count and speed through flat sections on weaker waves) but to combine it with the ability to take on as wide a range of wave conditions as possible. In a range of sizes with the longer lengths accompanied by more volume and more forgiving rails the board is accessible to almost any surfer, however in the shortest lengths a thinner deck and hard rails in the rear third mean solid performance for anyone wanting to surf up to 6" shorter than their normal shortboard.

Fins

The Speed Fish is supplied with a set of FCS M series fins and a set of FCS GX's.

Please check out the Fourth Surfboards website for more information about the Speed Fish

Fast, super responsive with quad set up,catches anything too. I'm 6'4 and 16 st and the 6'9 works perfectly for me , as a step down from a 7'2 magic carpet. Enjoying pumping down the line with the front foot and gaining the speed to lay up and throw those big snaps and hacks! love it! Great packaging,no dings, and good shop advice from the guys before i bought it.

Nice board. Fast enough and dead easy to ride. Seems to work well up to shoulder high (not had a chance of anything bigger yet). Nice fin options (I've only ridden it as a thruster), finish is good but from a couple of minor pressure marks mine now has I'd say not the strongest. Good wave catcher, hides it's volume well (mines 6ft with no channels), and not too 'floaty' on the bigger stuff. Overall good board at a good price.

Really good fun. Was bit concerned 6ft3 might be a bit bit small as I'm 6'2 and 13st and coming down from 7ft but floats and paddles great no probs even in small stuff.

LOVE this board i stepped down from a 7ft 2 board to a 6ft 3 speed fish thinking i might struggle a lil with the smaller board, but im surfing better than ever the board holds the wave nicely with those channels under the board and flys down the line, the 5 fin set up lets you play with the fin set up which is great i personly prefer the quad, iv surfed everything from 2 foot mush to 6ft plus, i highly recommend this board to anyone its great fun.

Good Stuff. Firstly the shape is very very nice. it surfs well is super easy paddle and holds the rails superbly, and its fast. Bad Stuff. It is of terrible manufacturing quality. When i got mine there were areas in the channels with bits of rough raised glass. The final sanding job on the entire board was rushed and of a totally unacceptable quality. If you wipe it with water and hold it to the light you can see deep scores left from coarse grade sand paper. the board was not even sanded in a completely longitudinal direction. The finish is poor, not what one would expect from "a local shaper". The board developed grazes, or small micro cracks after 1hr of very light surfing. I know its normal for a polyester board, but surely not after first getting wet. The board snapped after 3 surfs. right through the channels and the areas of raised glass.

MSW Response
Having brought the board back into our warehouse and had it carefully inspected we found no issues with the finishing on this board. We did, however, find damage that had been previously repaired and additional damage on the rails, nose, tail and underside of the board all caused by the owner. The base of the board is covered with marks from stones hitting it in the shorebreak. The snap has cut clean through the tail, stringer and actually snapped two fin plugs, all without causing substantial de-lamination of cloth and foam. In the interest of transparency we're leaving this review here and for even more transparency anyone calling in at the warehouse is welcome to inspect the board themselves. It's been damaged then snapped, but we can find nothing else wrong with it the shaper could have prevented.

Excellent service from the sales team at msw. Sorted out the shipping queries I had to get the board to Jersey very quickly and delivery was really fast.

Fast and manouverable running it as a quad. Loads of buoyancy with the 6ft9 for my 80kg, I could go much shorter. At this size it catches waves in poor conditions. The blank actually has 6ft9, 20.5, 2.75 penciled on it which is more than quoted on the website. Presumably this means its more than the stated 42 litres also.

The Board has more to offer you than a "pic a mix". Goes well in any surf, easy paddle, light and smooth through all sections of a wave.

We are in the middle of a long flat spell at the moment so I'll let you know about the performance when we eventually get some swell.

does what it says on the tin. only been out twice. 2-4 foot. very forgiving, easy to paddle, turns well. the finish on the board is not smooth/glassy as i expected.

First 'perforance' board having spent my first year on a BIC 7'9". The board looks really good, good package. Had 30 mins on the Fish and the transition from the BIC looks to be OK and comfortably challenging. Board is much easier to get out on and is easy to paddle on without the over buoyancy of the BIC. I'm 6' and 90lbs (14 stone), and although the board looks much smaller than the BIC, it is still user friendly. Highly recommend for anyone in same starting out position as me.

The board is of the highest quality. Rock composites out of Cornwall and Escape surfboards have done a fantastic job. I asked for a 2010 shape with the 2009 colours and the shapers were more than happy to accomodate, and the blue bottom looks epic. I bought the fourth speedfish as a single quiver board. It performs in all waves surfed so far, 2 foot up to 4 foot it grips the side of the wave very well, and you can take off pretty late let me tell you. The rocker is large enough to give you the confidence to throw it into maneuvers but not too big you can't catch the small stuff. The rail is sweet and the step (back underside of the board) really helps along with the channels underneath the board to drive you through the flatter sections of the wave. What else to say? Oh yes the nose is just right: as with any board you will pearl if you are too far fowards, but trust me it retains its shortboard look while giving you just enough volume to not nose dive into waves all day. I would pitch this board equally at people looking for something less hard core than a toothpick, or someone comming down from a minimal or larger shortboard. Strength of construction? My board put entire fin ALL the way through my surfing buddies board the other week and zero damage to my board. The glass is thick enough to withstand knocks, its not tufflight or epoxy it will pressure mark eventually. i think its 1x6mm bottom 2x4mm top coat. As a guide to size, I stepped down (or up depending on how you look at it) from a 6'6 stick to a 6'3 speedfish. I am 5'10 and 75 Kgs.

* * * * * 14th July 2009
fantastic board, brilliant first day with it, can't wait to get in water with it again. Can't knock a board that can take a 6'5" 16 stone and throw him down the face like a bullet from a gun.....
