Description
Apparently fear sells - well if you want the bad news read about surfers ear below. If you already know the risks these earplugs are pretty much the best protection you can get, available in two types:
Aqua
A solid rubber plug with three sealing rings inserting into the ear canal, with a storage case. Surfers Ear Basically as the ear is exposed regularly to cold water the bony lining under the skin inside the ear canal develops lumps that, in time, can cause a partial or total blockage. Rendering the ear very prone to infection and causing deafness. Not sure why the condition is so unheard of amongst the general surfing population - probably because it takes years to develop seriously so the effects are normally seen in older surfers - we're really not making this up honest! The Treatment The treatment involves making a hole behind the ear and drilling out the lumps. As well as obviously being no fun it'll leave you out of the water for at least a couple of months. Prevention Always better than cure - avoid getting cold water into the ears, earplugs are a solid option, a hood will help in winter and some surfers use blu-tack as a cheap alternative. Haven't tried them in the water yet, but on dry land they fit great and seem to make a good seal. Significant sound reduction, not sure if that will be ideal in the water.

Earplugs fell out first time i used them, not even very heavy waves, also they stick out and look a bit stupid, it's worth buying a more expensive mouldable pair, that's what I've done and they work really well.

i prefer these to docs proplugs because if your ears are a slightly different shape or size docs pro plugs might fit one ear and not the other so you have to go for moulds and they cost a fortune. So I bought Hearos and whilst you cannot hear very well with them in they are more effective at keeping water out!

Good product but I found that they began to hurt after an hour or so, especialy with a hood pressing them in, but better than getting surfer's ear.

this is my second pair, just in case I might loose them. They fit snuggly and stay in my ears even in the worst wipeouts the north sea can throw at me - not that they are that heavy. The only drawback: they look kind of silly.

5th January 2010
Snug comfortable fit, don't need to push them into the ear very far, moistening them first gives them a great seal and they kept all the water out of my ears even if it flushed into my hood when wiping out

These are the best earplugs I've used, and I've tried quite a few different kinds over the last few years. It's worth warming them in your hands a little before you put them into your ear - they'll soften, feel more comfotable and fit better.
Surfers ear is no fun - I don't want it, but Scotland's waves aren't going to warm up much.
