We have been impressed with the warmth of the Flash Bomb series of wetsuits from Rip Curl for the last couple of seasons and this year they have made a couple of changes which should make for a more flexible and comfortable wetsuit which still locks in warmth.

Still there is the Flash bomb lining, a thick, fluffy layer which extends from the ankles to the top of the chest panels, it traps air creating an insulating layer which helps keep the warmth of your body inside the wetsuit for longer sessions.

The taping on the inside of the seams has been updated to the E4 tape, it's really stretchy so it's been used on the whole wetsuit including the arms, with no liquid seal on the outside of the seams this ensures a more flexible feel throughout.

The neoprene used for the main panels is of the usual high standard, it's comfortable and the cut, especially on the arms, means that there's fewer panels and less stitching so you have stretch where you need it.

This seasons Flash Bomb is the best one we've seen so if you feel the cold and want to be warm this winter the Flash Bomb is a great choice.

Choosing the right thickness for you

This is a 5/4/3 wetsuit, it has 5mm panels in the torso and legs and 4mm panels in the arms and 3mm panels under the arms, this ensures you get the warmth in the core of the body and the flexibility to paddle in the arms.

The best thickness of wetsuit for you depends mostly on where and what time of year you will be surfing, 5mm is the most popular thickness for year round surfing in the UK, with the right accessories you can use a 5mm wetsuit even in the coldest months throughout the UK.

We have created a guide which goes into more depth about choosing the best thickness for you so if you've got any doubts take a look at the msw wetsuit thickness guide

Choosing the right size for you

Getting the right size wetsuit is critical, the wrong size will not keep you warm and could end up putting more stress on the seams, different brands use slightly different size charts so you may not be the same size across different makes of wetsuit, we suggest looking at the size chart page to judge which size will be the best fit for you.

If you have any questions about the differences between wetsuits, the fit or the thickness that would be best for you give us a call on 01548 854660 or an e-mail on store@magicseaweed.com where we're happy to help.

  • This wetsuit is the best that i've had. Being a surf instructor, i'm in the water for 4-6 hours a day on average, so need a good suit. This suit keeps me really nice and warm (too warm sometimes) even on the coldest days. In my opinion this is due to the inside lining that takes the water away from the skin and the hydro lock seal on the neck, arms and legs, effectively locks water out of the suit. If you do get a heavy intake of water into your suit, you can feel the water being taken away from your skin, and drained down the suit very quickly. Though it is a winter suit, the E3 neoprene makes it extremely stretchy and flexible, which as an instructor is very useful when i'm teaching, and also allows me to suit up quickly as well. The hydro lock collar does not rub on my neck either thus no wetsuit rash. I generally find this a problem with most other wetsuits after a long session, but certainly not with the Flash bomb. Overall, I am extremely glad I bought this wetsuit, and it is definitely worth the £300 price tag.

  • When you only buy a new wet suite every 3-4 years its worth buy the best, I've had about 5 surfs in the new Flash Bomb, all of them ice cream head conditions, and I was toasty. Easy to get into "for a winter 5mm suite" more flexible the my 5mm e-bomb and the only way to describe the warmth. It felt like I had just had a piss in my suite the whole time I was in the water, I hadn't though, the days of me pissing in my winter suite are gone. A big thanks to RipCurl. Warm as piss.

  • Great wetsuit. Light, flexible, warm and comfortable. I have the summer and winter thickness versions, and both are great. I have had a few RipCurl wetsuits over the years, and they always seem to be pretty good, although not that durable over time!

  • Super fast delivery, great service and awesome suit. Got me through many winter sessions in Ireland. You know it's a good suit when you have to go in because of the fatigue and not the cold.

  • Wetsuit received in good time on the other side of the planet. Good condition. Fitted well. Return label is a great idea, in case we ordered the wrong size. We do like the idea of supporting our local shop, but if we can't get what we want from them, then we are very pleased to be able to buy from the UK, a product that should come from Australia, to end up in New Zealand. Look forward to another wetsuit when this one is outgrown.
