This weird yet compelling book about all things surf is designed to work almost entirely visually (it's very graphical). That said the text is genuinely useful and the topics covered go beyond the scope of many books (eg. CPR and emergency first aid alongside board design, rip currents, paddling position, tides, fin choice etc). Clearly a lot of research has been done and for a first time surfer or keen beginner there's alot here that you might not have picked up elsewhere.
With a heavy cloth binding and 150 full colour pages it'd make a decent gift for anyone interested in learning who might not be into a dry, text only read...
