Description
Shaper Ian Johnson gives a broad overview of the lessons learnt in a lifetime shaping. It's ambitious and designed to give anyone interested in learning to shape their own boards a complete start to finish understanding of the process. Covering the basics of board design (tail, rail, concaves, planshape, fins and rocker), the mechanics of shaping your boards through to graphics, glassing and fin placements.
What we really like is Ian goes into specifics with some really solid practical tips from getting rails sorted to mixing and applying the resin and glass, making this pretty much all the information you'd need to get your cloth, resin and blank into a ridable state.
A personal labour of love this book is self published, there's no hardback or expensive bindings so don't expect them. What you get is best described as 'magazine format' with around 40 A4 pages of information and diagrams ending with a list of suppliers who can deliver the raw materials you need to make your own boards.
We wouldn't hesistate to recommend this book to aspiring first time shapers.

Pretty basic info. Explains the effects of different shaping elements well such as concave for example but doesn't say how to shape it into a board. It has some good tips though.
jose f. lago greenaway
Really good book, could go into more detail but overall some good tips.
Michael Gibbon
Magnificent collection of information. The details I have provided the finishing touches!
Michael Kiefel
Great book, covers all the basics and tells you how much you need for resin mix's. I great foundation for surf board building.
Graham Hadaway
It's a handy reference for making a copy of an existing board, however it is not comprehensive and lacks a lot of detail on design details for a book that is titled surfboard design and construction. It particularly lacks detail on fin positions and rather annoyingly even comments in the book, that you must take care to research your fins because the author is not going to give away all of his secrets. Which leaves me feeling a little cheated because I have found better resources online, which were free!
Tim
only very general information. i hoped to get more details.
Vincent Dario
This book is basic, but i was ready for my blank within a few pages.
kev_von_rev
Useful book. If you're planning to build a board for the fist time it's worth it. As others have said, it really does need proof reading though!
L Wall
Good book with handy tips, even though ive been shaping a while i found it useful.
Stephen Parks
Some interesting basic points on surfboard history and design but very basic. Spelling and typo errors. 4/10

I bought this book prior to a "Surfboard shaping and laminating" course at MITEC, Milford Haven. The course was superb and the book was an excellent read prior to practical work and gave me a real insite to further techniques not covered in the course. A brilliant manual at a bargain price. My only criticism being that it maybe a bit vague about some method of fin placement.
Dr Justinian Bo
not so detailed like I'd hoped. Pretty generic informations
Riccardo Calabrò
some bits quite confusing but otherwise a great book with a lot of information
Lucy

Nigel Pearce
wasnt quite as detailed as I expected but ok!
Catherine Morrison
very good book . . though language can get a bit too technical at points leaving me bewildered!
josser
was a gift so can't comment yet
Hayley Chinsammy
Some well presented, if basic thoughts on design, more aimed at someone shaping their own board as the majority of the book is a "How To" guide. The text could really use some proof reading before publishing as some parts are hard to follow.
Harry Knight
Is something i've had interest for in a while and found this book to be very informative but loose letting you use your own ideas and designs. the only thing that still confuses me is the whole resiny coating shiZ.. nvm though i'm sure i'll understand one daY
Jamie Isted
the book looks more flimsy than on the website though, it seems to be more of a report than a book. Haven't read the book yet, but seems to be all it claims to be. Nice to get a basic description of surfboad design and construction
Michiel Bensdorp
Brilliant introduction to shaping & glassing but needs a new proof reader - I will be ordering Shaping 101 off the back of this. The more you learn the more you realise just how much you don't know...
Eskimo
Had no idea what was involved but knew that I wanted to attempt to make my own. This is given me enough info to at least start to get ready.

Terje Mikal Worum
Not the best of english(and I am italian...),a bit too essential on design as it could advise potential surfboard buyers much better.
Massimo Locci
The author needs to refine and get the book proof read. More indepth information is needed.
