Billabong

Hailing from the sun-soaked beaches of the Gold Coast, Australia, like all good early surf brands Billabong first hit the surf market in the 1970s with a uniquely designed surf product and humble hand manufactured grass-roots. In their case it was the boardshort, cut and stitched on their kitchen table. Billabong’s boardies found immediate traction, with surfers drawn to their superior functionality and increased durability courtesy of the unique triple-stitching technique developed by founder Gordon Merchant. With the success of their first product, Billabong continued into surfing as one of the first early sponsors of the better local surfers and later into contests and special events. Billabong continued to expand on their homeland Aussie success, to take on the rest of the world in the 1980s. As surfing began to expand globally in the 1990s, Billabong also followed its core customers into other boardsports markets, including skate, snow and wake. Under the Billabong wing of sponsorship are the world famous WCT surfers Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, and legend Mark Occhilupo, freesurfer Dave Rastovich, as well as the late 3 times world champ Andy Irons. One of the heritage brands of surfing, if you know anything at all surf-wise, you’ll have heard of Billabong.
