One of Channel Islands latest high performance shortboard creations and designed in collaboration with team rider, Dane Reynolds is the Peregrine. The Peregrine is the fastest falcon in the world and like the falcon it is named from, the Peregrine is a speed machine that flows with power and huge amounts of responsiveness. “Designed for maximum down the line speed, quick transitions, and big rail turns.”
The first noticeable feature on the Peregrine is the four channels sat towards the tail on the bottom of the board. The channels combined with a fairly low tail rocker help to create great tail release perfect for blow tails and airs. The channels are also beneficial for creating crazy down the line speed as they direct water flow through the tail. The outline of the board is a fairly regular high performance shortboard template with slightly more volume to enhance the overall speed. The Peregrine also features the classic CI hip tail that helps with the responsiveness and manoeuvrability. The Peregrine has been designed with a low entry rocker which adds tremendous amounts of speed to the board that will see you flying through even the flattest sections. The rocker then drops into the tail with a nice amount of kick through the channels creating lift for the super quick release and great transition for rail to rail surfing.
Another notable difference between the Peregrine and a regular shortboard is the fact that the deck has been designed completely flat. This provides the board with different flex properties and the peregrine has a more positive feel than your average go-to thanks to this design feature. As such, the team at Channel Islands recommend riding this board 1/8th of an inch thinner and roughly the same height as you or up to 2 inches taller than you for good waves. The Peregrine also works well for a small wave board if surfed a couple of inches shorter than you.
