Wow, what a beauty this is. If the initials “MR” don’t set your pulse racing, here’s a quick recap. In 1980, with one world title already under his belt and most of his rivals still riding single fins, Mark Richards chopped a few inches off his already-game-changing self-shaped surfboard, narrowing the nose slightly and pulling in the tail while he was at it. In the process, he basically perfected the twin fin. For the next three years he was untouchable, winning his second, third and fourth consecutive world titles; in fact none of the subsequent modifications he made seemed to improve the board, so in the end he decided to leave it just as it was.

The MR Retro Twin is an exact copy of that board, still unchanged after all these years – the same vee bottom, same winged swallow, same '70s/'80s rocker, same slightly beaked nose. We’ve managed to get our hands on a few of them, all shaped by MR himself. Richards rode his in the 6’2” x 20 1/4” x 2 3/4” dimensions – he stood at slightly over 6 foot himself – but we’ve also got the 6’0” and the 6’4”. Here’s your chance, then, to own a little piece of surfing history, a board that changed the course of surfboard design.

But this is no relic or ornament to be displayed on your wall (although it would look great hung up in your living room, to be fair), nor is it merely of historical interest. Nearly 40 years on, it still rides as brilliantly as ever. In gutless 2ft surf, the extra area and volume under your chest gives you tremendous glide and paddle power, enabling you to stroke into waves easily. When it’s 6ft and pumping, the pulled-in swallow tail with the wing provides the necessary hold and control. The concave flute running through the bottom of the wings also helps here, acting almost like an extra fin and giving this board amazing drive for a twin fin. Richards considers this board the best all-rounder he ever came up with.
