Sharp Eye #77 Thruster FCS II Surfboard
- Colour: White
Remember when Filipe Toledo broke the judging scale at J-Bay and redefined what's possible at the legendary South African point break – redefined what's possible on a surfboard full stop? The magic number wasn't 10, despite what the scorecards said. It was 77.
Filipe says the #77 is the fastest board he’s ever ridden, and he’s not the only convert. After Toledo’s back-to-back wins at J-Bay, Kanoa Igarashi rode the #77 to victory – his first ever – in Bali in May 2019, making it probably the “winningest” model (as the WSL commentators would put it) of the past few seasons.
It’s another magic board from Marcio Zouvi, who set up Sharp Eye Surfboards in San Diego twenty-five years ago and is now one of the world’s most in-demand shapers. The combo of pronounced rocker and aggressive single concave is classic Zouvi, turned up a notch for better waves. The rails are likewise geared toward maximum performance: fairly low and sharp, with a particularly hard edge above the fins.
Having said all that, it has a surprising amount of width and thickness (and thus volume) for a "good-wave" shortboard (see dims table below). The result of this unique mix of elements is an absolute race car of a surfboard.
You'll be able to ride this board in most conditions, but it will work best when the waves have a bit of power and size; on those 5-star days when the waves are supplying decent push and speed, you won't want to be riding anything else. We'd recommend it to any confident intermediate-plus surfer – "it has the most amount of rocker [in the Sharp Eye range] and some features that might make it a little bit hard to control for a beginner," said Zouvi when we quizzed him about it.
