Sharp Eye The Disco Thruster FCS II Surfboard
- Colour: White
Sharp Eye Surfboards, the Californian board-builders responsible for the equipment of Filipe Toledo (amongst others), are now available in the UK for the first time! The Disco, probably their most popular model, is a high-performance everyday shortboard with stellar grovelling credentials... but is it really grovelling when speed comes so easily and you barely have to, well, grovel?
It's suitable for most conditions and will probably be your first choice whenever it's anything less than epic, so in UK surf – rarely classic, generally (let's be honest) pretty lacklustre – you'll realistically be riding the Disco 80-90% of the time. The extra volume and planing area (plus a few magic touches from shaper Marcio Zouvi) will get you paddling into plenty of waves and generating momentum straight out of the gates.
The construction on the Disco is classic PU; design features include a moderate rocker throughout, an aggressive single concave especially through the fins, and a wider outline with large flat deck. A good balance of speed and manoeuvrability is what you're after, not one without the other, and that unique concave-rocker combo will help you find/create speed and unleash radical turns on even the most gutless of waves. (If you find all this rocker and concave chat boring/useless/confusing, just take the word of one recent customer, who simply said: "bloody amazing".)
Coming with a squash tail and FCS II thruster fin system, the board should be ridden several inches below your height. It's a great small-medium wave model for surfers reluctant to go for a full-on fish – the Disco still feels very much like a thruster. "It's NOT a fish," says Zouvi, as though insulted by the very notion. "It's a high-performance small-wave board." Amen to that.
